National Union of Ghana Students(NUGS) which is the official mouth piece of students in Ghana as well as Ghanaian students in abroad is currently having a Congress to elect new executives for this academic year.
The successes of NUGS after 1965/66 where it became formal is enormous but as a nation, we are slow to realize the potential of students activism in training and recruiting our future leaders. After 49 years of students' struggle in Ghana, it can hardly be said that students' movement like NUGS is capable of providing the necessary leadership skills. The ordinary Ghanaian student's expectation for this Congress is very high as it touches on graduate unemployment in our nation.
That not withstanding, the current state of NUGS lacks the bavado because the flame of student struggle which was set ablaze and handed down to successive generations began running out of steam as government regimes revolves and it was evident in the early 1990s till date.
NUGS must work again, NUGS Congress must not be only talk shop, It must not be waste of students' resources but rather an avenue to addressing the plight of Ghanaian student.
We need synergy and renaissance to transform our dear union and as such the communique that will be issued at the end of this Congress must have teeth to bite.
