MAKE IT COUNT-UCC DONATES TO TWO DEPRIVED SCHOOLS IN THE WASSA EAST DISTRICT

Make It Count-UCC with the support of Unilever Ghana Limited have presented some educational materials to Nkapiem D/A primary and Adiembra Primary schools both in the Wassa East District of the Western Region of Ghana.

Make It Count is a brain-child of PAOSA (Presec and Abugiss Old Student Association) and is basically a student-led campaign that engages students in community development through initiatives such as THE ONE EXERCISE BOOK PROJECT through which students contribute the little they can for the well-being of less privileged children.
The learning and teaching materials presented were mainly from their key sponsor Unilever Ghana Ltd, patrons of PAOSA UCC and proceeds from the "One Exercise Book Project" door to door campaign.

It is worth noting that the choice of these schools is quite commendable since they truly reflect the struggle that some not so fortunate Ghanaian children have to go through to be educated as compared to their colleagues in the cities.
The Chief of Nkapiem village lamented that since the inception of the school in 1992, some few fortunate children who have had the opportunity to further their education to neighbouring Junior High Schools have proved to be exceptionally brilliant but have had to drop out one way or the other due to financial constraints. He therefore stressed the need for other individuals, private entities and NGOs to emulate the "Make It Count project" and come to their aid.

Notable among the stationery materials include about 1,530 exercise books, 430 pens, 100 pencils, 100 sharpeners, 46 school mugs, 20 boxes of chalk, cardboards, rulers, notebooks, erasers, dictionaries, school files and footballs.
Miss Eunice Arhin, a member of the Make It Count-UCC team presented the items to the schools.

Receiving the items on behalf of Nkapiem D/A primary school, the headteacher, Mr Michael Asare thanked the team for the wonderful gesture adding that the school had never received any assistance of that sort since he became headteacher of the school some six years ago. He prayed that God grants the members of Make It Count-UCC and student donors more grace to successfully complete the University and become useful to themselves, the needy, and the family or society they come from.

Mr. Michael Asare also used the opportunity to highlight some challenges the school has been facing over the years which needed urgent attention by the government. Speaking to ucctalks.com, he iterated the fact that the village generally was off the national grid of ECG and lacked quality drinking water, healthcare center and accommodation for teachers. He appealed to the government to enroll the school onto the School Feeding Program to motivate the pupils to stay in school.

THANK YOU UNILEVER
Jonathan Gasoa, the S.M.C chairperson finally thanked the team and their sponsors for the support rendered to the school. He pleaded with the team to continue embarking on donation exercises to encourage the younger ones in deprived communities to appreciate education.
Make It Count-UCC also used the opportunity to thank their major sponsors, Unilever Ghana; Odade3 Alex Darku (Canada); the Patrons of PAOSA-UCC, Professor S. Y. Mensah, Provost of CANS and Mr Koranteng-Addo, a lecturer at Chemistry Dept. and the entire students of UCC for their support.
