Complement the role of the school for total development of your child – Pro Vice-Chancellor

The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. George K. T. Oduro has admonished parents to augment the role of the school to ensure a holistic development of their wards. He made this statement at the 52nd Anniversary and Speech and Prize-Giving Day of the University of Cape Coast Primary School. Speaking on the theme “Parental commitment: A key component of the child’s education”, the Pro Vice-Chancellor; who was the Guest Speaker stated that “as committed parents, we should have time to listen and to discuss issues with our children, be sensitive to their problems, keep watch on their activities at home and also track them through their teachers”. He commended mothers for always playing their roles and urged the fathers to emulate their spouses for the complete upbringing of their wards.

The University Primary School was established in September, 1964, by the University of Cape Coast, to assist the then Faculty of Education in implementing the core mandate of producing high caliber graduate teachers. The ceremony began with an exhibition of the school pupils’ crafts. The school’s cultural troupe also displayed their skills followed by a splendid choreography display by the gallant kids. The chairman for the occasion, Rev. Prof. Asare-Danso commended the school’s cadet for their display of discipline and urged them to approach their activities with tenacity.

The Head teacher, Mrs. Georgina Aglobitse in giving her maiden report, enumerated many successes that the school has attained over the years. She stated that the school placed first in the National Junior Graphic spelling competition and a pupil also placed second in the National Scripps Spelling Bee Competition. In the area of sports, Mrs. Aglobitse stated that the school won a trophy in football, three gold medals, a bronze and two silver medals in field events in the 2015 University Basic Schools Sports Association (UBASSA) games which took place at Legon. She stated among other things that the school has pilot tested an electronic reporting system which has been developed for the school as part of a ‘comprehensive internet based management of students’ record system which will ease the burden of teachers and administrators who go through rigorous processes to produce pupils report and other records’. She further enumerated the absence of internet accessibility, large class sizes, and lateness to school by pupils as some of the challenges facing the school. She stated that some attempts have been made to address facility and infrastructural needs of the school, as well as improve on the performance of pupils. Mrs. Aglobitse expressed her appreciation to the school management and to her predecessor Ms. Agnes Gyimah and her Assistant Head Teacher Mr. Joseph Obeng for their enormous contribution to the school.

Special awards were given to pupils who excelled in various subjects, to climax the occasion.
