The University community is informed that the shuttle fare is now 60 pesewas. The new fare takes effect from today.
Two years ago, in 2013, the shuttle fare was increased from 30 pesewas to 50 pesewas for various factors. Over the years, inspite of the pressing challenges, the fare has been maintained at 50 pesewas. However, the upward adjustment has become necessary.
After a round table discussion with the various stakeholders including the private shuttle operators, the decision was reached. In the discussion, there were salient and convincing arguments to raise the fare to 70 pesewas yet after firm negotiations, the now effective fare was decided upon.
Considering the present economic challenges, it would have made sense to peg the fare at 70 pesewas. Yet, the plight of students was strongly factored into the considerations.
An attempt to have left the fare at 50 pesewas would mean that in the next year, the upward adjustment would be very unbearable. Failure to make a reasonable upward adjustment of this sort would only lead to unreasonable and sharp increments in the future or even destroy our shuttle system altogether.
The UCC SRC would like to strongly advise all students to make it a point to claim their ticket right after making payment. It is very important.
Also, even though the new tickets bear 70 pesewas on it, students are encouraged to be vigilant and not be cheated or bullied into paying 70 pesewas. The fare is 60 pesewas.
Negotiations have not ended. Further talks are being made to ensure that a shuttle is stationed at Ayensu so that it can transport students to Science and Oldsite.
Efforts are also being made at ensuring that the shuttles will move on a time schedule so that students can reach their destinations, particularly lectures, earlier.
More work is being done to improve our shuttle system. The SRC would like to call on all students to remain united. It is the only way we can stand. Together we stand.
