IS GREED REALLY KILLING AFRICA??

In 1993, Margaret Thatcher had been out of office for two years and Kamuzu Banda was just coming to the end of his reign as the President of Malawi. Margaret Thatcher had been the Prime Minister of a developed country, one of the world’s wealthiest and industrialized countries, the United Kingdom, for eleven and half years; Kamuzu Banda’s Malawi was one of the poorest countries in the world surviving on foreign aid. And in 1993, Margaret Thatcher’s wealth was put at $9.5m. Kamuzu Banda’s wealth was estimated at $320m, that is, 53 times the wealth of Margaret Thatcher. How come leaders of poor Africa are richer than leaders of first world countries??In other words, Kamuzu Banda of poorest of the poor Malawi was worth 5300% more than Margaret Thatcher of first world UK. How do you explain that??  Remember that by comparison, Kamuzu Banda’s wealth was that of a mere pauper in juxtapose to Abacha’s wealth estimated in billions of dollars. When Zambia’s Frederick Chiluba left office, he was put on trial for corruption and abuse of office. At the trial, it came out that on one trip abroad, Chiluba went on a shopping spree and had come home with eleven(11) trunks of personal items made up of 64 shoes, 206 designer suits, 185 shirts, 74 designer ties, 36 jackets and 157 trousers, totaling $1.1m. Do you think a leader in any first world country can afford to spend that much on clothing on one trip?? And Chiluba was the leader of a poor country. How do you explain that??Africa is not poor and yet infrastructure is in disrepair, our people live in poverty, our schools have broken down and our hospitals are very poorly equipped and staffed. The reason for this poor state of Africa is not that the continent is poor but that there is too much greed in Africa. But it is not only African leaders who are greedy. Greed has become very pervasive in our society at all levels, even as students.
