The First National Conference on Guidance and Counseling in Ghana has been held at the University of Cape Coast with a call for the promulgation of a comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Act to regulate the activities of the profession in the country.
Opening the conference, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D. D. Kuupole observed that
there was no code of ethics guiding the practice of Guidance and Counselling in the country. He pointed out that the counselors were guided by ethics developed by foreign Counseling Associations such as the American Counselling Association. Prof. Kuupole expressed worry that “Ghana and Nigeria attained independence in 1957 and 1960 respectively, but the former satisfies most standards of the profession”. He added that there was a professional association which was founded in 1976 with a specific body of knowledge in guidance and counselling as well as accredited guidance and counseling programmes and above all a code of ethics for its members.
The Vice-Chancellor stated that “The Guidance and Counseling profession focuses on assisting individuals, groups and families to solve problems, learn to make useful decisions and to adjust to their environment. “In view of this importance, Prof. Kuupole called on participants to form a counseling association for the country “since when this is done, guidance and counseling would become a well established profession in the country”. He noted that through quality guidance and counseling programmes, problems students face at the various level of education in the country could adequately be addressed.
The Provost of the College of Education Studies, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, who chaired the opening ceremony commended the organisers of the conference for their efforts and expressed the hope that more of such national conferences would be held in future. The conference attracted counseling professionals from all walks of lives throughout the country.
