YOUTH ADVISED AGAINST BEING USED FOR POLITICAL VIOLENCE

The Central Regional Communications Director of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), Mr. Abraham Agyekum Sunday, has urged all students and the youth in general not to allow themselves to be used as tools for political violence in election period.

"During elections, people would do anything for their political party. You should not be part of those people. You have a decision to take -  a decision to go to the polling station and cast your vote, go back home and let's decide who wins the election", he said.

Mr. Agyekum said this during a presentation on the theme" The Role of the Youth in Ensuring and Promoting Peaceful Election 2016" at the launch of the Students' Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast 53rd week celebration which was held on Saturday, March 19, 2016.

He further stated that as youth of this country and as students of the university and intellectuals for that matter, we have an informed decision to take on national matters. Thus, it is imperative for us to consider the interest of a better future when voting for a particular candidate in an election.

"Consider it, in your quiet moment, as voters or as deciders in an election, decide on the position you are making, whether or not it is in the interest of your future or it is in the interest of somebody's position he is going to accomplish tomorrow", he indicated.

He also touched on the fact that there have been several instances of election violence in this country and almost all of them have not been caused by an old man or woman but someone between the youth age group. He, therefore, advised that no student or youth should be frustrated to take up any activity especially to defend any political party because it would eventually be at their own detriment.

"How many of the people that you defend even know your first name? When the politicians are looking for subversive teams, they forget they have children who can be part of that team and so it becomes other people's children who must be used."

Mr. Abraham Agyekum Sunday concluded by emphasizing the need for a special National Identification Card (ID) for every Ghanaian which would eventually help solve the hullabaloo on whether or not there should be a new voter's register for the November 2016 General Elections.
