A Special Congregation ceremony has been held by the University of Cape Coast to award honorary degrees on three illustrious personalities of Ghana, at the University.
The three distinguished personalities are Mr. K. B. Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on the other hand was conferred Doctor of Letters (D.LITT), Honoris Causa degree.
It is the tradition of the university to award speakers of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial lectures honorary degrees; hence, Mr. Asante who was the speaker for the 2015 year’s lectures was recognized as such. The two other awardees are alumni of the University who have distinguished themselves creditably in their respective fields of endeavour.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof, D. D. Kuupole, in an address noted that the conferment of the degree was to recognise the outstanding qualities of the three people who were honoured. He described the awardees as “selfless, humble and through their hard work, have served humankind and impacted positively on the lives of people in society”.
Explaining the criteria for selecting personalities for the honorary award, Prof. Kuupole said thorough background scrutiny was undertaken before one would be deemed fit to be awarded. “Like the eagle, we cast our eyes round the world to identify persons of repute who have made significant contribution to societal well-being and award them for their achievements”.
The Vice-Chancellor said, the conduct of these personalities was perfect example of commitment and dedication to duty, saying “some of them are individuals who I can testify confidently to have dedicated a greater part of their lives, knowledge and energies to the development of the University of Cape Coast”.
Prof. Kuupole pointed out that the practice of recognising deserving personalities, was an indication that the University was an institution worth dying for. “By this action, we wish to continue a tradition of honour, such that UCC will be seen as an institution to live and work for”. He stressed that UCC, a centre of excellence, recognises excellence in these individuals who, through service, academic and professional output, as well as conduct, have made an invaluable contribution to human, national, international and institutional development.
On behalf of the awardees, Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang thanked the University for the honour done them. She pledged to continue to serve humanity and lead a lasting legacy for others to follow.
The Chancellor of the University, Sir, Dr. Sam Jonah chaired the programme.
